Coming to terms

Squirrels! Squirrels write Mary Worth. While the past storyline seemed rather mind numbingly dull to most humans, squirrels found the saga of Mary caring for and returning a dog extremely fascinating. Compared to the excitement of tree climbing, gathering nuts and dodging traffic and predators observing the mundane doings of the geriatrics at Charterstone must be a welcome respite.

Drew, you will never reach the runner's high by seeking it directly. It's a Zen thing. You find by not seeking. Of course, you are only prolonging your suffering through your aversion to the unpleasant feelings caused by being dumped. Also, you run like a girl.

The Community Shadow

I want Drew's swordfish t-shirt. I guess this is how the young doctor remains hip. The universe would have collapsed in on itself if Giella put this on Drew. That would be funny and we can't have intentional funny in Mary Worth.

Where is Drew calling from? Pink curtains and flowers in a bachelor's place?

I've been reading, "The Issue at Hand: Essays on Buddhist Mindfulness Practice" by Gil Fronsdal.

Yesterday, this passage jumped out at me:

As soon as a group of people gathers as a community, there is a culture, and cultures always have blind spots, or "shadows." If you avoid being involved with a community because it has a shadow, no community will ever be adequate. If you relate only to the light of a community, you are doing yourself a disservice. If you relate only to the shadow, you are also doing yourself a disservice.

Fronsdal refers to a sangha but I found it relevant to UU church community. People in true community should not be afraid to display both their light and shadow.

I was reminded of the shadow aspect of the UU religion by this blog posting. It was not the first time I read such sentiments. Often we forget that our political views are as diverse as our theologies.

This depicts my meditation yesterday. The monkey mind was going wild. Get back on the cushion and try again. Or not try. The cartoon is funnier given Buddhism's admonition against consuming substances that cloud the mind.

News Flash! Everyone's teen years were painful. Dawn does not know how to flirt and is starting to scare Dr. Drew Corey. He has moved from the seat next to Dawn and moved to the seat across from her. Even scarier is that people have come in, eaten and left since this dinner has gone on. People disappeared between panels.

Proud auntie moment: my older nephew was mentioned in Dale Campbell's 2007 Texas Football magazine as a prospect to watch in the next high school football season. I bought a copy of the magazine and scanned the cover and page he was mentioned. I will send it to the rest of the family. We are all proud of him. I'm sure he will live up to the "hype".

I was the only person in the Barnes and Noble that day that did not buy the last Harry Potter book. I bought a Star Trek book, an anthology of Tales from the Captain's Table.
