Two Songs from Arrested Development

1990's Hip Hop in church?

My kind of church music...
The videos consist of a shot of the CD cover.

Man's Final Frontier

Song lasts 2:40.
Space ain't man's final frontier!
Man's final frontier is the soul!

Fishin' 4 Religion

Song lasts 4:10

Lyrics:

Grab the hook, grab the line
Grab the bait, grab the box and wait
Tackle and shackle the topic the faculty has chosen
Chosen by many, chosen by plenty, chosen by any
man or woman who understand
the topic that's known and
[Go by the dock] flock and clock the topic
as I drop my hook and get a bite
The reason I'm fishin' 4 a new religion
is my church makes me fall asleep
They're praising a God that watches you weep
and doesn't want you to do a damn thing about it
When they want change the preacher says "shout it"
Does shouting bring about change ? I doubt it
All shouting does is make you lose your voice
So on the dock I sit in silence
staring at a sea that's full of violence
Scared to put my line in that water
coz it seems like there's no religion in there
Naively so I give it another go
Sitting in church hearing legitimate woes
Pastor tells the lady it'll be alright
Just pray so you can see the pearly gates so white
The lady prays and prays and prays and prays
and prays and prays and prays and prays...it's everlasting
"There's nothing wrong with praying ?" It's what she's asking
She's asking the Lord to let her cope
so one day she can see the golden ropes
What you pray for God will give
to be able to cope in this world we live
The word "cope" and the word "change"
is directly opposite, not the same
She should have been praying to change her woes
but pastor said "Pray to cope with those"
The government is happy with most baptist churches
coz they don't do a damn thing to try to nurture
brothers and sisters on a revolution
Baptist teaches dying is the only solution
Passiveness causes others to pass us by
I throw my line till I've made my decision
until then, I'm still fishin' 4 religion

Fishin' 4 religion (11x)
Fish
[Believe !]
[Everybody in the house tonight...C'mon let me hear you say]
[Fishin' !]

System Of A Down - Aerials

My kind of church music:

System Of A Down - Aerials

Embedding disabled - click on link to watch video. Video lasts 4:03

Lyrics:

Life is a waterfall, We're one in the river, And one again after the fall.

Swimming through the void
We hear the word, We lost ourselves,
But we find it all?

Cause we are the ones that want to play,
Always want to go, But you never want to stay,

And we are the ones that want to choose,
Always want to play, But you never want to lose.

Aerials, in the sky,
When you lose small mind,
You free your life.

Life is a waterfall,
We drink from the river, Then we turn around and put up our walls.

Swimming through the void
We hear the word, We lost ourselves,
But we find it all?

Cause we are the ones that want to play,
Always want to go, But you never want to stay,

And we are the ones that want to choose,
Always want to play, But you never want to lose.

Aerials, in the sky,
When you lose small mind, You free your life.
Aerials, so up high,
When you free your eyes, Eternal prize.

Mama Cass Elliot - Make Your Own Kind Of Music

My kind of church music.

Video lasts 2:46. Song fades out a bit too soon.

Lyrics:

Nobody can tell ya;
There's only one song worth singin'.
They may try and sell ya,
'cause it hangs them up
to see someone like you.

But you've gotta make your own kind of music
sing your own special song,
make your own kind of music even if nobody
else sing along.

You're gonna be knowing
the loneliest kind of lonely.
It may be rough goin',
just to do your thing's
the hardest thing to do.

But you've gotta make your own kind of music
sing your own special song,
make your own kind of music even if nobody
else sings along.

So if you cannot take my hand,
and if you must be goin',
I will understand.

You gotta make your own kind of music
sing your own special song,
make your own kind of music even if nobody
else sings along.

This is a 52 part series. One song a week.

You can get a preview of upcoming songs by visiting my YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/LCausey) and looking at the Favorites tab. Not all the songs in my favorites are part of the church music series, some are there because I like them. I like the church music songs but I like the others for non-religious reasons. Yes, the Ray Stevens song is in the church music series.

The Impression That I Get - The Mighty Mighty Bosstones

My kind of church music.

Video lasts 3:16

Lyrics:

Have you ever been close to tragedy?
Or been close to folks who have?
Have you ever felt the pain so powerful,
so heavy you collapse?

I've never had to knock on wood,
but I know someone who has.
Which makes me wonder if I could.
It makes me wonder if I've never had to knock on wood.
And I'm glad I haven't yet because I'm sure it isn't good,
That's the impression that I get.

Have you ever felt the odds stacked up so high,
you need a strength most don't possess?
Or has it come down to do or die?
You've got to rise above the rest.

I've never had to knock on wood,
but I know someone who has.
It makes me wonder if I could.
It makes me wonder if I've never had to knock on wood.
And I'm glad I haven't yet because I'm sure it isn't good.
That's the impression that I get.

I'm not a coward,
I've just never been tested.
I'd like to think that if I was I would pass.
Look at the tested, and think there but for the grace go I.
Might be a coward,
I'm afraid of what I might find out.

I've never had to knock on wood,
but I know someone who has.
Which makes me wonder if I could.
It makes me wonder if I've never had to knock on wood.
And I'm glad I haven't yet because I'm sure it isn't good.
That's the impression that I get.

Never have,
I'd better knock on wood.
'Cause I know someone who has.
Wonder if I could,
it makes me wonder if I've never had to.
I'd better knock on wood 'cause I'm sure it isn't good.

And I'm glad I haven't yet,
that's the impression that I get.

Earth, Wind and Fire: Shining Star

Funk and soul in church?

Video lasts 3:16

Yeah, hey
When you wish upon a star
Dreams will take you very far, yeah
When you wish upon a dream
Life ain´t always what it seems, oh yeah
Once you see your light so clear
In the sky so very dear

You´re a shining star, no matter who you are
Shining bright to see what you can truly be
That you can truly be

Shining star come into view
Shine is watchful light on you, yeah
Gives you strength to carry on, yeah
Make your body big and strong, do ya hear me now
Born a man-child of the sun
Saw my work had just begun
found I had to stand alone
Well, bless it now I got my own oh yeah

So if you find yourself in need
Why don´t you listen to his words of heed
Be a tiny grain of sand
Words of wisdom, yes I can

You´re a shining star, no matter who you are
Shining bright to see what you can truly be
You´re a shining star, no matter who you are
Shining bright to see what you can truly be

Shining star for you to see, what your life can truly be
Shining star for you to see, what your life can truly be
Shining star for you to see, what your life can truly be

Icicle Works: Whisper To A Scream (Birds Fly)

1980's New Wave in church?

Lyrics:

Love come, Down upon us
Till you flow like water,
Burning with the hope of insight
Feathered, look they're covered with a bright elation
Stolen in the sight of love

[Chorus]
We are, we are, we are all just children
Finding our way around in decision
We are, we are, we are rather helpless
Take us forever
A whisper to a scream

Birds fly
In the eye of the faithless daughter
broken at the bitter end
Wasted, sacrifice for a new nirvana
Right time send us on our way

[Chorus 3x]
We are, we are, we are all just children
finding our way around in decision
We are, we are, we are rather helpless
take us forever
a whisper to a scream
a whisper to a scream
a whisper to a scream

(We are, we are, we are all just children
Take us forever
A whisper to a scream)

We are, we are, we are all just children
Finding our way around in decision
We are, we are, we are rather helpless
Take us forever
A whisper to a scream

We are, we are, we are all just children
Finding our way around in decision
We are, we are, we are rather helpless
Take us forever
A whisper to a scream

I think of these songs as something to play and listen to rather than sing, if used in an actual worship service.

Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel

An idea so brilliant that I had to steal it. More like inspired me to think about the songs that move me and share them with others. Shamelessly stolen from UU A Way of Life - my kind of church music. Our tastes may overlap though mine tends toward the mainstream. I would pick Peace Train by Cat Stevens for my kind of church music, too.

My first pick for my kind of church music: Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel

Happy cocktiel vs. Happy baby

As an owner of a cocktiel, I found the third panel of Baby Blues a bit offensive. Salvador can make some annoying noises when happy but he is not nearly as annoying as a loud baby. I'm one of those nasty people who cannot distinguish between loud annoying happy noises and loud annoying other emotion noises. My pain receptors cannot make the distinction. I would rather hear a cockatiel or any parrot in a restaurant over a baby regardless of its emotional state.

The two times that I've taken Salvador to a public venue (church for animal blessing) he has been fairly quiet. Just a bit of soft chirping.

Happy cockatiel does not equal happy baby! Happy cockatiel rules! Happy cocktiel rocks!

The Voice of the Shatner

I think the term, whisperer to describe a gifted animal behaviour expert has been a bit over-used. Perhaps, now a cliche. It inspired a few gags: Gila Monster whisperer, Whisperer whisperer, Ho whisperer. I drew the Gila Monster whisperer.

This weekend, I discovered that William Shatner's musical work has a very calming effect on the birds. Walter was playing selections from our music collection and transferring some of the songs to his phone. I own a CD of William Shatner's The Transformed Man. Salvador and Edgar would chatter, scream and bother each other while other songs played but as soon as Shatner's rendition of Mr. Tambourine Man played both birds calmed down and by the end of the song they were hunkered down on opposite ends of the shelf barely keeping their eyes open. Walter played other songs and the birds would start up again but they calmed down upon hearing Shatner's Lucy in the Sky. This experiment continued for another hour. Most songs would get them excited but the voice of the Shatner (that needed to be bold) calmed them down. Leonard Nimoy had a similar effect but not as pronounced as the Shatner.

I will try the experiment some more with other Shatner renditions from YouTube. He did a pretty cool rendition of Common People with Joe Jackson on the Conan O'Brien Show. I have an animated Star Trek mash-up featuring that song among my favorites on my YouTube channel. If the birds start squawking during Joe Jackson's singing part then it is safe to say that my birds have really interesting musical tastes.

I am glad that they have not added the Enzyte commercial to their whistling repertoire. I'm sure a quick search of YouTube will turn up video of a pet bird that has added that to their repertoire.

Hopeline Video

Did not update the website last night because of a thunderstorm. The rain was needed. Saw Wall-E last night. Cute movie.

I was a bit of a slug this weekend. A time for work and a time for rest.

I decided I will open the church for meditation this summer. If someone shows up, we will sit. If no one shows then I will go through the items in the back room. Several books, tapes, magazines and other items were added to the Sangha collection. This past Sunday I reorganized the cushions and went through the books currently in the library and changed their labels. I would like to get the tapes on to CD or DVD (whichever is appropriate). I have the tools for a video tape to DVD transfer but not a cassette tape to CD.

I plan to put together a list of the books in the library. I took a snap shot of each book in the current library and will incorporate the newly added books in the coming weeks. Who would have thought that a cell-phone camera could be so useful?

As long as I'm fully present this work can serve as a meditation tool.

Below is a special video about Hopeline. Feel free to add it to your website or blog.

Battlestar Galactica

The first of episode of the final season of Battlestar Galactica premiers tonight on the Sci-Fi Channel at 9:00 pm Central Time.

To my friends and family, I love you but do not think about calling me after 8:55 pm tonight unless you are dying.

When Battlestar ends Sci-Fi better have something just as good to replace it. No not another Ghost Hunters, please. Battlestar and Enterprise reruns are the only things that really justify Sci-Fi's existence.

I anticipate major geekgasm tonight.

In case you have not seen this yet:

Getting things done

I finally found a way to get up in the morning and make it to work on time. I use my cell phone's alarm clock feature and have the sound set to the chirps of Salvador. The sound wakes me gently rather than jarring me out of a dream and Walter does not hear it and get disturbed. I've tried it successfully for two days so far. I haven't experienced the 9:00 am - 11:00 am struggle to stay awake, either.

I've accomplished a few minor but overdue tasks.

Things have become a bit busy at work but I don't mind. Keeps me out of trouble and justifies my existence at work.

I feel good about how this week has unfolded so far. I'm a bit behind in scanning my cartoons but I still have four days worth on the hard drive. I have three cartoons in the box awaiting scan.

I still read the comics but nothing has been worth commenting on. At least the Charterstone Tales did not happen as I feared.

I finally saw the Chocolate Rain video on YouTube. Oddly enough, a reference to it appeared on both South Park and Lewis Black's Root of Evil tonight. I did not go looking for the video. I received a subscription update - looked at that video which lead to the Chad Vader parody of Chocolate Rain and finally to Chocolate Rain. I'm glad I caught that bit of pop culture when I did or else tonight's line up on Comedy Central would not have made as much sense, especially, South Park.

Massage therapy is winning the Mary Worth poll. Still time to cast your vote. If you want to know what being a super delegate feels like vote 1,000 times.

Comics and dog photos

iPot? Apple really has expanded its product line.

The advertsing on the TV cracked me up. I wonder what makes this production of "The Lottery" appropriate for the Comedy Time Channel? The irony in "The Lottery" or the presence of Patrick Duffy and Morgan Fairchild? I imagine this production with a cheesy 1980's vibe and chuckle. I don't think the people in Dinette Set would get it.

As others have pointed out Dr. Drew put his affairs in order and left for Vietnam faster than Mary has in telling her story. Five days spent telling Toby that she is going to tell her a story about her past.

A couple of cell phone photos of Angus, the Pit Bull:

I just love his pinkish nose. How could anyone not talk silly to that face?

Living the dream

Wally and I have the same dream.

My job title is changing to better reflect what I do and will do. The HR people in my office will offer suggestions to the agency HR office. A lot of the candidates have "communications" in it. The agency HR will do whatever they want with those suggestions. I don't have the programming skills to qualify for "Software Simian" but I could squeak by with "Code Monkey". The agency has a career ladder for its people to climb. A prehensile tail would facilitate the climb. I will probably end up with Senior Office Associate (because we don't want you to start climbing a new ladder that more accurately reflects your skills and duties). I have no reason to be so pessimistic. The actions and suggestions taken so far lead me to believe that I will have the opportunity to climb a different ladder. Regardless of the title, I'm excited about the new duties and responsibilities. Unlike Wally, I will have to do more work and show real value.

Mary is also proud of taking part in the washing of Pilate's hands, standing around St. Petersburg when it was time for a change, and riding a tank while holding a general's rank. Have some sympathy, courtesy and taste.

Cool Video

When I visited my family yesterday, someone mentioned that Uncle Tommy had videos on YouTube. I came home last night and searched and found two videos. I also did a Google search on Tommy Crook, hoping to find a website. I did not find a good website dedicated to him but found lots of information. I knew that Uncle Tommy played jazz guitar but did not know the extent of his influence or abilities. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame this year.

He plays at the Lanna Thai Restaurant on Memorial in Tulsa, Oklahoma every Friday, 7:00 - 10:00 pm
