Exercise Log: October 19 - 24

This week I ran and biked 34.21 miles, burned 2807.5 calories and weigh 147.3 pounds.

Sunday: Harbor Half Marathon - 13.1 miles in 2:24:57
Tuesday: bike 4.48 miles in 20:00; ran 1.84 miles in 20:00
Wednesday: ran 3.42 miles in 35:00
Thursday: bike 7.73 miles in 35:00
Friday: ran 3.40 miles in 33:58

I will attempt to run a sub 30:00 5k at the Impact Animal Foundation 5K on Nov. 8. More details about the race: http://www.woodstocktexas.org/index.php?funrun2008

I have maintained the required pace (for 5 miles) during a tempo run while training for the Harbor Half and on the treadmill. I am confident that I can do this in a race now that I have a feel for the pace I need to run.

Harbor Half Marathon

I did a trial run on Saturday to prepare for my race this weekend. I ran 13.24 miles in 2:26:49. I maintained an average pace of 11'06 min/mile or 5.4 mph. That pace was not too difficult to maintain. I set my BIMActive pace monitor to 11'36 min/ mile. I will keep that setting for the actual race. I might push a bit harder on the second half of the race depending on how I feel and the conditions but unless it is unusually hot and humid then I should finish in under 2 and a 1/2 hours quite easily.

The hard part will be the trip to and from Corpus Christi.

Traces of the Trade

Last night, the church hosted a showing of the documentary, Traces of the Trade, along with a discussion afterwards.

Traces of the Trade explores the experiences of descendants of a family that made its fortune in the slave trade. A very thought-provoking documentary.

One of the discussion questions was about embarrassing or uncomfortable interactions with African-Americans.

An incident from childhood worked its way back to the front of my mind. I thought about sharing it with the group but I couldn't. It hurt too much. I thought about writing about it in this blog but only the emotions and the impact it had on both players in this incident (beyond the immediate reaction to the incident, I can only speculate as to the impact on the other person). I still cannot speak or write of the details of the incident itself.

I'm having trouble even writing about the emotions. All I can say is that it still haunts me even after over 30 years and it ranks as the dumbest thing I've ever said to another person in seriousness. I've said plenty of dumb things that were meant to be jokes; things that get taken the wrong way, intentions not made clear, ignorance or simply poor taste. I said this thing out of ignorance of such a magnitude that someone might have assumed that I had some kind of mental handicap, but I was not joking.

I find myself unable to write any further about this incident despite the emotions roiling within and the thoughts doing battle in my head. Just too much to write about in a coherent way.

Say AHHH

Crossing the finish line:
Approaching the finish line:
I wasn't yelling or singing, I was breathing very hard through my mouth. I should breathe through my nose but it stops up when I do vigorous exercise.

Only one of two races that I felt like puking after crossing the finish line. Both races were 5Ks. Maybe because I push myself harder for the shorter distance. My stomach settled very quickly and I did not puke.
As soon as Mary Worth figures out if Richard and Ron are a single female nurse with a split personality she will get her meddle on big time. Meddlehellacious!

Run Thru the Vines

This morning I participated in the 31st Run Thru the Vines 5K/ 10K race put on by the TAMU Roadrunners. Walter is posting pictures on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/22287142@N02/sets/72157604503764494/

My unofficial time (according to my timer) is 33:45. I ran the 5K and set a personal record.Chilling before the race with Messina Hof winery in the background. It was cold but once I started running I felt fine.

Transcript of Barack Obama's speech about race

Read this. Click the link and read this.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/18/us/politics/18text-obama.html?ex=1363579200&en=01c3df099739ddd0&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink

Wow.

Maybe I wasn't paying attention before but this is the first time that I'm aware of an African-American acknowledging the fears and concerns of white Americans in public. The things that some of us are afraid to voice because of the fear of the racist label.

What can all the experience in the world accomplish if you cannot unite people to a common cause? If you cannot convince people to think differently, what will you accomplish? If you will not listen, how can you unify a nation?

From this speech I gathered that Obama has listened, he can unite people and he can convince people to think differently in order to solve the problems facing the country.

Why are you still here? Click on that link and read the speech. Try to read for comprehension. It may be more words than some of you are used to but take it slowly and don't forget to click on next at the bottom.

The joys of running

Runner's World often has articles about the joys of running. Great scenery, learning the layout of the neighborhood, getting to know neighbors, good health, less stress and many other benefits. Every issue of Runner's World features a photo of a "Rave Run", a place of majestic scenery. For some reason most of these photos are from the Pacific Northwest. John Bingham has a column in which he writes about runners knowing where to find streets, familiar faces and the little adventures one experiences while out on the road.

I experienced a little adventure while running today but I doubt it would qualify for Runner's World. As I was running down a street, a woman sitting in a chair under a carport called out to me and asked if I had a cell phone. She wanted to call her son whose car had broken down in Brenham and she wanted to check on his progress. The son found a flywheel for the car and was in the process of fixing it. So I paused my tracker on my cell phone and dialed the number. She left a message and told him that she was using the phone of woman who was jogging by. After that, she told me the back story. Oh boy.

[content about race (not the running kind) ahead]
She and her son had a disagreement regarding his girlfriend. The girlfriend is going to have a baby that is the wrong color. The woman was not going to allow the girlfriend to stay in her house. This angered both sons and her husband. They all left with the vehicles and all the meat except for the sausage which the lady does not care for. She was not giving up the house that a man had fixed up real nice for them. She ranted a bit about the poor treatment she had received despite the financial help she had given them and other acts of kindness. She mentioned a neighbor willing to intervene if they did not start treating her right, her sister in Louisiana dying of kidney failure and attempting to hitchhike to the doctor. The lady has a very visible disability - it was the prime reason that I did not mind approaching and allowing her to use my cell phone, I did not perceive her as a threat. Anyway, the lady mentioned that she has not seen me jogging down this street before and asked if it was my first time. I told her I think it was my second time. She told me about a group of Mexican ladies that walk/ jog several laps and that if she had good legs she would do the same thing. She hoped they will come back because she needed to go to the doctor this week. I hope the neighbor she referred to will help. Ten minutes later she finished her story and I was back on my way.

I made it home and related my adventure to Walter. We both reflected on the weirdness. White people assuming other white people have the same views (this happens in any group - church, social, racial, economic, work). The other people in the lady's life surprised by her views. Focusing on the color of the baby as a reason for the disagreement as opposed to other legitimate reasons such as her son not being the father or adultery. I wondered if I would have missed out on this adventure if I had been a different color. Then I thought of the real irony behind prejudice: she and others who I've met like her cannot afford to live in a neighborhood that does not have a lot of the people that they dislike in it. Odder still, she and others like her would not consider themselves racist. The KKK are racists, skinheads are racists, Neo-Nazis are racists, not them.

I will drive by the lady's house later and see if anyone made it back. Part of me wants to help and a larger part of me does not want to get sucked into this wreck. I understand why the others in the Bible story walked on - they could have gotten hurt. I will add her to my meditation. I know it is the wimpy way but I'm not Christ nor the good Samaritan.

Armadillo Dash

According to the time I took myself, I ran the Armadillo Dash Half Marathon in 2:48:03. Official time may differ. If I want to to improve my time I will need to train specifically for these events rather than just signing up and running. I'm proud of the progress I've made in my own physical fitness that I can just sign up and run in a half marathon. I ran preceding two half marathons but nothing over 3.5 miles, just my normal non-training running.

Here are a few pictures my husband took:
Crossing the start line. I'm the one in the yellow shirt and shades.
In the final stretch.
Walter says hi and I look.
Trying to force my body to go a bit faster in this final stretch. It was a gorgeous day - high temp of 72 degrees F. A bit windy.

More pictures that Walter took from the 2008 Armadillo Dash can be found on Flickr at this URL: http://www.flickr.com/photos/22287142@N02/sets/72157603976180446/

For the first time I bled at a race. I felt my toenail on my fourth toe rub against my third toe. I noticed it but did not think much of it. When I came home Walter helped me take off my shoes and noticed a bit of blood on my right shoe. The sock had bloodstains and when the sock came off my third and fourth toes were covered in blood. With all that blood I expected a rather large gash. The wound is only about 5mm but boy did the blood flow. I will need to trim that toenail.

I'm stronger

Crop Walk was very successful. The UU Church of the Brazos Valley raised over $2,000. Don't know if we won the challenge from Friends Congregational. They raised a bit more money but the challenge was a per capita challenge so as a smaller congregation we might have won on that basis. It is still up in the air.

The CROP Walk coordinators welcomed us back and recognized some new organizations.

Loki did well. He got a bit excited upon seeing another dog and nearly knocked down some people with his leash at the beginning. He calmed down after the first mile. About halfway he found a nice puddle and decided to lay in it for a while. He made it through, got some attention, ice cream and water.

As for the Saturday 50K. I did not finish. I ran about 20 miles.

I missed a turning point and ran over 4 miles of trail twice. I was timed at 5 hours and 21 minutes when I made it to the finish line.

I was quite frustrated with my slow pace and by mile 14 decided to cut it short. At a lot of places on the trail I felt I was running faster than my timing indicated. It was 4 hours and I was not halfway done. I did not want to be out there after 3:00 pm. I called my husband to let him know that I would be at the finish in about 45 minutes, assuming I could complete the last mile and a half in that time. Then missing a turn really added to the frustration. He called when I was not at the finish line and I told him that I thought I missed a turn and I was doing a part of the trail again but I knew where that trail would lead eventually. He kept calling to try to help the race people figure out where I was. They did figure it out and I found a point on the trail where I was able to get off and get to a location where I could be picked up. A truck picked me up and I rode about .75 miles. The driver of the truck allowed me to get out and I ran to the finish line. I'm not sure how my results will get recorded.

I wasn't the only who missed the turn. Some of the others doubled back but I didn't. The race director thinks a sign might have been knocked down while doing an extraction the night before.

At least I ran my 20 mile long run for training for the San Antonio Marathon. I can taper with a clear conscience.

I think my less that satisfactory performance was because I was not preparing for this race but just using this race to prepare for another one. I have run these trails faster and in more brutal temperatures.

I realized that I don't enjoy trail running as much as road racing. The tripping, isolation and wrong turn did not enhance my trail running experience. It will be a long time before I attempt a 50K on a trail. I really prefer road racing.

Saturday night enjoyed a nice margarita. My feet hurt but I did not care.

I'm at home resting. My calves are sore.

It did not kill me therefore I must be stronger.

One month...

One month until the San Antonio Marathon of the Americas

Eep, two days until the Power Pedal Ride and Stride 50K Trail Run
I think I will switch back to my old insoles or buy a new pair of the same style. The new style insoles that I bought are causing blisters on the inside of my arches. I hope the gorgeous fall weather and lower temperatures hold out the entire weekend.

Three days until Crop Walk
The UU Church is now number one and the youth member online now is the number one fundraiser with the church. There are other walkers and more donations received offline. Brazos UU is making a big comeback to this event.

Happy National Coming Out Day!
I would love to design some greeting cards for that day. Anyone have any ideas?

Running Log

Ran 3 days in a row this week. All 5K. Ran 10.21 miles, burned 1342.2 calories and weigh 176 pounds.

Wednesday: 5K - 38:24
Thursday: 5K - 37:10
Friday: 5K - 31:31

Almost time to start training for an October marathon in Waco (October 28, 2007). San Antonio (Nov. 11, 2007) looks interesting. After looking at the website and last year's course map, I think I will run in San Antonio instead of Waco. It starts at the Alamo and has several historic missions and other interesting scenery on the route. As a 5+ hour marathoner, I need scenery. Waco has nice scenery too.

Perhaps build a real vacation around the San Antonio marathon. I'm a bit worried that San Antonio has not updated their website and registration has not opened yet.

I could try a challenge - 2 marathons within a month of each other. While I'm having this moment of insanity, why not add the Marathons of Texas Challenge?* Run 5 marathons in 5 months - Waco, San Antonio, Dallas, Houston and Austin! I think my family would have me committed if I did such a thing.

*Marathons of Texas - Dallas White Rock, Chevron Houston and AT&T Austin

Run and sleep, sleep and run

This week I ran 15.1 miles, burned about 1919.4 calories and weigh 172.5 pounds.

Monday: 3.28 miles in 35:00
Wednesday: 2.33 miles in 25:00
Friday: 3.29 miles in 35:00

Saturday ran in the Run Thru the Vines 10K. I don't have the official results yet but I estimate my time as 1:06:00. About a 10:30 mile. It was cold and windy.

I seems like I spent most of the day in bed. I ran in the race, went home, took a shower, read and started a nap. Someone called and woke me up. Just as I started to go back to sleep I received another phone call. I got out of bed to wait for some visitors. The visitors came and went. I went out to get some lunch and came back. I went back to bed and read for a while then fell asleep again. I was awakened by my earlier visitors bringing Pickles back. I tried to go back to bed but the dogs wanted to go out so I took them out and went back to bed. I was again awakened by a phone call from Walter. He thought it was safe to call but he did not know that I had been attempting to take a two hour nap all day. After he got off the phone, I was finally able to take an uninterrupted nap.

I spend a lot of time on the weekends sleeping. Trying to make up some sort of sleep deficit, I guess.

To hell with it

Forget the update, I'm going to bed. I have a 10K race tomorrow.

Saturday, March 03, 2007

This week I ran 9.32 miles, burned 1127.3 calories and weigh 169.2 pounds.

Tuesday: 5.05 miles in 55:00
Thursday: 4.27 miles in 55:00

Tomorrow, I will be running in the Armadillo Dash 1/2 Marathon. There will be up to 1,000 runners. Not bad for a first time event. I hope the timing chip pick up goes smoothly.

My sinuses are still a bit stopped up. Mentally, I feel foggy. Running helps clear out some of the fog so I should be able to run tomorrow. I might have to re-evaluate my goal time (2:30:00); not run as fast as I intended.

I plan on resting and drinking lots of fluids today. May take Loki to the dog park. It is such a beautiful day.

Saturday, February 24, 2007

This week I ran 16.3 miles, burned 1995.1 calories and weigh 170.2 pounds.

Tuesday: 4.10 miles in 45:00
Thursday: 4.20 miles in 45:00
Saturday: 8 miles in 1:33:00

Next Sunday is the Armadillo Dash 1/2 Marathon.

Sunday, February 11, 2007

This week I did not exercise as much as usual. I had a meeting and a party to attend.

I ran 8.84 miles, burned 1,094.5 calories and weigh 170.2 pounds.

Tuesday: 2.17 miles in 25:00
Thursday: 1.29 miles in 25:00
Saturday: 5 miles in 51:50

The Kyle Field Ramp Romp is Feb. 24th. It is a 5K race where the course covers part of the Texas A&M campus and the ramps of Kyle Field. The ramps on both sides of the field. I'm thinking about doing this race just for the challenge of going up and down the ramps. It could be fun.

Monday, January 15, 2007

Texas A&M is closed tomorrow because of icy conditions. There is ice on the trees.

I'm still a little sore from the race but I can move like a normal person instead of like "The Old Man" that Tim Conway used to play on the Carol Burnett Show.

The 2007 Chevron Houston Marathon was my best race so far. Made a personal record and according to my graphic results ran my fastest pace between miles 13 and 18. Ran the first 10K a bit slow but picked up the pace after that. I felt good most of the way. Had a scary moment with one of my knees while running down an underpass toward mile 24 but it passed. Pushed a bit harder starting at mile 25 and then picked it up a bit more when a spectator told me that I was 3 minutes from the finish. I did not do the .2 sprint. Too tired.

I was great seeing a large crowd cheering me on as I ran toward the finish. Houston puts on a great race and the spectators are there until the end cheering on every last runner. If you have a chance to run the half or full marathon in Houston, do it. Some people waiting for a car at the hotel cheered for me when I got out of my car wearing my medal. The Houston marathon has been voted as the marathon with the friendliest spectators by Runner's World. That is important when you are not very speedy. I'm grateful to all the people who cheered me on and to my husband for his support.

At the Expo on Saturday, I bought a new sports bra at the Under Armor booth. I've used other Under Armor products before and they have performed very well. I was looking at the bras and I noticed the tags on one rack said "D Support". D Support? A company is acknowledging the existence of women with tits who like to participate in high impact sports? Wow.

I tried one on and it fit very well in the dressing room. Did a bit of jogging in place and it seemed to work well so I bought it. I talked to the sales girl a bit. Thanked her for selling this bra. She mentioned that it was the best selling item at the Expo. It seems that Under Armor discovered a demand for high impact sports bras for women with substantial breasts and decided to make a product.

I ran the marathon wearing this bra and it performed great. I put on my usual layer of Body Glide on my skin. I did not feel the bra, I did not hear flesh slap together, did not feel my tits bouncing all over and when I took off the bra when I got back to my hotel, the only marks on my skin were the usual marks from just wearing clothes that go away after an hour. Not a single burn or blister. My regular bras couldn't do that even with lots of Body Glide. This Under Armor bra worked great during some extreme high impact conditions - 5 and a half hours of running on pavement. Now that this product is available it will save some wear and tear on my other bras.

I did not have any serious injuries - just an odd blister on my middle right toe.

My next race is the First Annual Armadillo Dash - a half marathon in College Station on March 4. I'm going to try to run a bit faster than my marathon pace and finish this in 2 and an half hours or less.

Right now, Loki is producing enough gas to power a city block.

Sunday, January 14, 2007

Just got back from the Chevron Houston Marathon. Here are the unofficial results:
Start 7:05:02 CST
10K: 1:20:37
Half: 2:46:26
30K: 3:45:01
Finish: 5:30:58
Chip Time: 5:30:58
Clock: 5:36:46
Pace:12:37

The U.S. Half Marathon record was smashed by Ryan Hall - 59:43 - This guy ran 13.1 miles in fifty-nine minutes and forty-three seconds. Wow! He trains at high altitude and then comes to a race that is a few feet above sea level.

I'm going to lay down now.

Friday, January 12, 2007

Walked 10,906 steps/ 4.82 miles.

Ran 11.47 miles, burned 1,319.9 calories.

Monday: 3.87 miles in 45:00
Wednesday: 3.05 miles in 35:00
Friday: 4.10 miles in 45:00

Off to the big race.
