1,500th post

Tom Wilson probably found this hilarious. I have committed the same sin, inflicting a cartoon on the public that only I found funny. What is speaking, the toaster or the toast?

In honor of my 1,500th post - a funny Marmaduke.

Walter and I had the same sort of thing happen at our wedding reception. Some guy danced with everyone but he was not part of my family, Walter's family nor one of our friends. Just some guy.
From The Onion: Goofy Guy Named Gary Enlivens Otherwise Intolerable Wedding Reception

Our wedding reception was quite fun.
Marmaduke is a big hit at this party.

Mystery solved

Now, we know where Mary Worth goes during her absences from her comic strip. She works her speed checking shift in Ziggy.

Loki come here

Reminds that old Bill Cosby bit where he describes himself thinking that for the first few years of his life his name was Jesus Christ and his brother's was Damnit.

Loki recognizes his name very well. He even understands what I want him to do by the tone I say his name. He could probably do some great things if both of us had some training. I think Loki is very intuitive. After the San Antonio marathon I want to see about enrolling in a training class and Loki earning a Canine Good Citizen certificate. I think it would go a long way in eradicating the fear some people have of bully breeds.

Oh come on! Finish the damn drawing before sending it to the syndicate! A corkscrew, knife, bottle opener and nail file sticking out of the Swiss Army cheese would have made the gag somewhat funny. Did drawing all the other details make Tom Wilson too tired to continue?

Maybe I misinterpreted the gag. The deli employees are just messing with people's heads. That sort of thing works better in real life than on the funny pages.

An unrelated question that will piss off a few people: Doesn't the Nobel Peace Prize usually go to people or organizations that work toward peace and justice? Al Gore and the UN Climate Change group are doing some good work but is it peace and justice work?

Better Half of Dark Thoughts

Watch out Harriet. One day Stanley will snap after hearing one too many belittling comments. Maybe the blunt object is off panel. It's always a blunt object because a gun shot is too quick. A blunt object will allow Stanley to kill Harriet bit by bit in the same way that Harriet's demeaning comments chipped away at Stanley's soul bit by bit.

A single Better Half leads to more dark thoughts than several weeks of Mark Trail.
What drugs is Popeye's writer and artist using and where can I get some for myself?

It's really funny if you imagine William Shatner reading the dialogue.

Ziggy

Tom Wilson did not have space to draw the crest feathers but the bird depicted in this Ziggy cartoon is a cockatiel.

The bird has the cockatiel attitude. The scale in comparison to Ziggy is correct, in the mind of a cockatiel.

This is not Ziggy's regular pet bird.

I gripe about crappy comics in the paper. So, I will pretend that I am a newspaper comics page editor and share my line-up. I read a lot of these comics on a regular basis and others I read occasionally. Several comics that I read regularly do not appear on this list.

In no particular order, my fantasy comics line-up:

  • Tom the Dancing Bug
  • Too Much Coffee Man
  • Brewster Rockit
  • Ink Pen
  • Pooch Cafe
  • Red Meat
  • Rhymes With Orange
  • Six Chix
  • Spot the Frog
  • Zippy the Pinhead
  • Lio
  • Bad Reporter
  • Bob the Squirrel
  • Pearls Before Swine
  • Frazz
  • Moderately Confused
  • Over the Hedge
  • Watch Your Head
  • Brevity
  • Candorville
  • Cow and Boy
  • Dog Eat Doug
  • F Minus
  • Herman
  • Jump Start
  • Liberty Meadows (it's in reruns but the art is worth looking at again and again)
  • Off the Mark
  • PC & Pixel
  • Working It Out
  • Soup to Nutz
  • Little Dee
  • Go Fish
  • Dilbert
  • 9 Chickweed Lane
  • Ballard Street
  • Bizarro
  • Doonesbury
  • Get Fuzzy
  • Monty
  • Mother Goose & Grimm
  • Mutts
  • Non Sequitur
  • Pardon My Planet
  • Piranha Club
If a newspaper ever ran just those comics at a reasonable size and got rid of the crap comics, I would buy a subscription, regardless of the paper's location.

You can find these comics online at GoComics.com, Comics.com, and The Houston Chronicle

Speaking of comics:
No, Mary is not speaking to Dr. Jeff Cory but it's funnier to pretend otherwise. Also serves as a nice icon.

Ziggy wears underwear? Tom Wilson's cultural references become more recent. This one is only a decade old. At this rate, Ziggy's crazy lady astronaut diaper gag should appear in 2012.

THEY KILLED STARBUCK!?! I'm merely a fan and no longer part of fandom, otherwise I would have watched that episode of Battlestar Galactica that I recorded sooner and I would have known about Starbuck sooner. AggieCon 38 is happening and I don't care.

The first day of Spring, hooray!

Bonus icon:
The indifference of Mary Worth

Asking the right questions can also make most religions seem ridiculous. Fortunately, in the United States a boycott or a loud protest is the worst thing that can happen. Other places and times, death.

Yeah, yeah, blah blah, blahdeblah blah blah. Vera really starts at the bottom by taking a job that no longer exists. Mary Worth does not care she just wants your soul. Mary plucks the world's tiniest violin.

The first day of spring and I see this. Tom Wilson owes me something for disturbing me on the first day of spring. Ziggy does not wear pants and now he's modest? I wonder if this is before or after Ziggy has taken of business? The more I think about this comic the more disturbed I become.

I spend a great of time going over these entries to eliminate instances of passive voice. I do it for most of my writing. I do this to avoid the disapproval of an English teacher I had not seen in nearly 20 years. I doubt she reads this. I wonder if any of Ms. Kessler's other former students do this or am I just nuts?

Ms. Kessler taught junior and senior English at Spring High School in Spring, Texas.
